Baclaran Church on an Ash Wednesday

We managed to catch the faithful as they spilled out of the Baclaran Church Wednesday at noon time. Young seminaristas took cover under beach umbrellas as they marked with ash crosses the foreheads of the devotees who came in all shapes, sizes, and ages. I took a few pictures inside the church premises. I entered the area where they devotees offered candles and prayers. Later, I took photos of the church facade.

I lost my companion at some point and then proceeded to the makeshift tiangge by the church gate. There were many sampaguita vendors by the gate. Chichay, a wonderful looking old woman who was also selling sampaguita garlands was quite enthusiastic about being the subject of the camera and repeatedly said "Maganda ako eh."

Oh, what a riot the market was. They sold chestnuts, mandarin oranges, mangoes, caimito, green mangoes. I saw a man selling smoked bangus. Another vendor was selling tinapa, tuyo and other smoked fish. For only P100, we bought three kinds of suman (the finger-like ones in banana leaves wrappers, the ibos coconut wrappers, and the rectangular one with latik in banana leaves). The suman tasted great, especially with the coco jam: Bandong's Coco Jam (Ingredients: coconut and sugar) made in San Juan, Cainta, Rizal. Telephone Number: 635-0115.

The Baclaran Phenomenon is, first and foremost, the incredible number of people who come to the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran every Wednesday to make the Perpetual Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. It is estimated that at least 100,000 devotees come on regular Wednesdays, reaching about 120,000 on the First Wednesday of each month. The biggest turnout of the year is on Ash Wednesday. The crowd for that day simply defies estimate.
